I’ve been hoping to capture lightning at White Sands for many years now. In June it finally happened! This storm caught me off guard as I has hiked in pretty far to find untouched dunes. Instead of skirting the park it came right over it and I was caught in torrential rain! The crazy conditions made for a very rough hike back to the car. Blowing sand, heavy downpour, and a phone touch screen that wouldn’t work due to the rain caused me to wander off track and make a big loop back to the parking lot. It seemed like an eternity but eventually I arrived back, soaking wet, and with a now ruined lens submerged in water within my pack. To top it off, my lightning trigger fell off the camera and was now lost out among the gypsum. Luckily the next day my buddy was headed out to photograph more stormy weather and actually found the trigger! A wild and unforgettable day!
